Pharmacology and use:
Irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist similar to losartan and valsartan, is used alone or with hydrochlorothiazide to treat hypertension For the treatment of hypertension.

Mechanism Of Action:
Irbesartan antagonizes angiotensin II, the primary vasoactive hormone of the renin-angiotensin system, at the AT1 receptor subtype. As angiotensin II is vasoconstrictor which stimulates aldosterone secretion by the adrenal gland, blockage of its effects results in a decrease in systemic vascular resistance.
