Mexiletine

This page contains recent news articles, when available, and an overview of Mexiletine but does not offer medical advice. You should contact your physician with regard to any health issues or concerns.

Overview:

Mexiletine
(when available)

Pharmacology and use:
Mexiletine, a hydantoin anticonvulsant, is used alone or with phenobarbital or other anticonvulsants to manage tonic-clonic seizures, psychomotor seizures, neuropathic pain syndromes including diabetic neuropathy, digitalis-induced cardiac arrhythmias, and cardiac arrhythmias associated with QT-interval prolongation. For the treatment of documented ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained, life threatening ventricular tachycardia

Mechanism Of Action:
Mexiletine acts on sodium channels on the neuronal cell membrane, limiting the spread of seizure activity and reducing seizure propagation. The antiarrhythmic actions are mediated through effects on sodium channels in Purkinje fibers.
