Propafenone

This page contains recent news articles, when available, and an overview of Propafenone but does not offer medical advice. You should contact your physician with regard to any health issues or concerns.

Overview:

Propafenone
(when available)

Pharmacology and use:
Propafenone, a hydantoin anticonvulsant, is used alone or with phenobarbital or other anticonvulsants to manage tonic-clonic seizures, psychomotor seizures, neuropathic pain syndromes including diabetic neuropathy, digitalis-induced cardiac arrhythmias, and cardiac arrhythmias associated with QT-interval prolongation. For the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia, used to prolong the time to recurrence of paroxysmal atrial fibriallation

Mechanism Of Action:
Propafenone acts on sodium channels and potassium channels in the neuronal cell membrane, limiting the spread of seizure activity and reducing seizure propagation. The antiarrhythmic actions are mediated through effects on sodium and potassium (HERG) channels in Purkinje fibers.
