Overview:

Sumycin
(when available)

Pharmacology and use:
Semisynthetically produced from chlortetracycline, which is derived from Streptomyces aureofaciens, tetracycline is classified as a short-acting tetracycline. Tetracycline is used to treat infections due to rickettsia, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and chlamydia, Lyme disease, brucellosis, and syphilis by inhibiting protein synthesis in the susceptible organisms. For the treatment of infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, chlamydiae, and rickettsiae, syphilis gonorrhea; For the treatment of respiratory infections, bacterial enteritis, meningcoccal carrier state, Lyme disease, cholera, brucellosis, leptospirosis, plague, and acne.

Mechanism Of Action:
Tetracyclines passively diffuse through porin channels in the bacterial membrane, reversibly binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit, preventing binding of tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, and thus interfering with protein synthesis.
